In Gosterwick: Training and Revelations

The week begins in Gosterwick, where the party continues their training and handles town business:

  • Alexos trains at the Temple of Mitra with Jador the Just, 9th-level Wiscin Priestess.
  • Belaros trains with the Knights of the Azure Shield under Martin Hadellor, Knight’s Commander.
  • Grim studies with Beryl Gneiss, Chief Associate of the Prosperity Factor.
  • Meric receives guidance from Anders the Snake at the Chapter of the Benevolent Brotherhood.

Belaros meets with Freydis, Steward of the Residence. She shares that Lady Alexia is searching for several ancient relics in Arden Vul to solidify her claim as ruler:

  • Bone Ring of Jagri-Naz – Rumored to be in the residence of Psalor-Ki, near the Obsidian Gates on Level 5.
  • Ebon Spear – Said to be held by an undead creature in the lizard-man-infested sublevels near Level 5.
  • Iron Circlet of Ghanor – Allegedly located in a tomb within the Halls of Thoth.
  • Tablet of the Beacon – Believed to be somewhere near the floor of the Great Chasm, deep below.

Belaros is offered citizenship in Gosterwick (80 days/year residency + town defense). He accepts and the party invests in a permanent residence, no longer needing to rely on inns.

The party spends significant coin identifying magic items and purchasing gear:

Magic Items Identified:

  • Potions: Extra Healing (x3), Invisibility, Invulnerability, Growth, Treasure Finding, Super-Heroism, Elixir of Youth, Clairaudience, Speed, Fire Breath, Watery Form
  • Gauntlets of Ogre Power
  • Animal Mask – Grants doubled senses (sight and hearing)
  • Wand of Alarms

Return to the Ruins

The group makes their way back up the Long Stairs to their secret rooms in the dungeon. Upon arrival:

  • They discover cart tracks leading toward the secret stairwell room. The door has been freshly plastered over.
  • A giant tick ambushes them from above. The group kills it quickly and begins unpacking.

Ilphas investigates the latrine shaft:

  • Descends ~550 feet and retrieves a copper ring, which turns out to be magical!
  • The chamber below is large but shrouded in darkness. Something stirs and he heads back the rope.
  • Sees something moving in the darkness—giant centipedes emerge.
  • He narrowly escapes as the party hauls him up.

Grim smashes the plastered-over stairwell door, triggering an acid trap. He’s burned but is treated quickly with water and sludge from a nearby pool.

A Strange Encounter: The Dragonfly Speaks

While exploring deeper into the ruins, the party meets the dragonfly construct again—it speaks!

  • It introduces itself as a drone of Kerbog the Khan, a mysterious, unseen entity far below the dungeon.
  • Kerbog seeks secrets and lost Rudishva technology. These ancient beings came from another world and left behind powerful artifacts.
  • Kerbog reveals:
    • The Darlings have destroyed several of his drones.
    • He seeks two missing drones: Corbel and Cobban, last seen heading toward goblin territory.
    • Obsidian Gates: Black stone doors said to conceal immense treasure; method of opening them is lost.
    • Stairs to Goblin Level lie west, past the catacombs.
    • Followers of Set are to the west as well—religious cultists occupying several dungeon zones.

Factions Mentioned:

  • Sun-Scarred Knights – Powerful warriors
  • Priscians – Secretive magicians
  • Varumani – Dangerous; rumored to be offspring or creations of the Rudishva
  • Heqeti – Frog-like natives; worship demons

Into the Catacombs

The party heads west to the catacombs:

  • Collects feathers for everyone (undead warding).
  • Opens both the north and west portcullises to allow undead movement and confusion.
  • We opern the one way door in the catacombs and move through a second into some rooms.

They explore several rooms:

  • Room 1: Contains two dead adventurers, some ghouls, and items:
    • Short sword, leather armor, silver signet ring
    • Snapped wand, and a fine but broken lute
  • Room 2: Plaster stripped from walls, piled up; southern door spiked shut; faint water sounds from beyond.

In the eastern chamber, they find Susarra, a female fighter:

  • Her companions were the two found dead.
  • They were teleported near a room containing a kraken-like beast in a pool.
  • They were trying to avoid the Set cultists, whose chanting they heard nearby.
  • The party agrees to escort her back to the surface.

Loot and Notes

  • Ring: Spell effect – Change Self
  • Lute: Can be repaired (150 gp) and sold (350 gp value)
  • Susarra: Offered a place in the company; she will consider it after resting at the Broken Head Inn.
