The Caves of Intensity: Timeline

The following events will happen if there is no intervention by the PCs.

  1. Day 1 – Lord Obtuse wanders into the Chapel of Intensity, and is overcome with powerful hyposis of the cave shadows.
  2. Day 4 – Lord Congruent leaves his hiding place in Lair E and dies in the evening from salt exposure.
  3. Day 6 – The fencing owlbear in Lair G wakes from his hibernation, wandering around lairs and challenging all he encounters to a duel. Add to the encounter table.
  4. Day 11 – The many taproot children in Lair B sprout, causing the taproots to double in size and gain a significant population advantage over the bulbs and tubers.
  5. Day 17 – The Halfling Acolyte bird watching program is a success. Future encounters with them are 50% likely to have a terror bird fledgling (HD 5, AC as Chain, Att 2 x claw 1d4, 1 x bite 1d6).
  6. Day 18 – Lord Obtuse breaks free of his enchantment in the Chapel of Intensity, retreating to the 42 in Lair I, where he strikes a demonic pact with the The Shambler.
  7. Day 21 – Having been fed well, The Shamber increases to HD 8.
  8. Day 24 – The Fungal Aliens determine that their pacification program is a failure, and start exterminating the gnolls by administration of a lethal virus. The few gnolls that survive retreat into hiding within other lairs.
  9. Day 34 – In a preemptive strike, two artichoke assassins poison the dandelion taproot leader with vinegar recovered from the shipwreck.
  10. Day 38 – A new taproot leader is anointed, a parsnip of HD 4. She immediately declares war against the bulbs.
  11. Day 42 – The Shambler increases to HD 9.
  12. Day 50 – The radiating waves of the singularity grow in strength, causing extreme fluctuations between arctic cold and desert heat to radiate through the surrounding lands.
  13. Day 54 – The halfling terror birds grow to adulthood (HD 7, AC as Chain and Shield, Att 2 x claw 1d4, 1 x bite 2d6) and turn on their captors. They are added to the wandering encounter table and roam in groups of 1d4+1.
  14. Day 63 – The Shambler increases to HD 10. It gives birth to a corm sorcerer (Magic-User 3), who immediately unites the lairs of bulbs and taproots.
  15. Day 72 – Bird flu strikes, wiping out 90% of the pigeons in Lair F. Those remaining set up poison traps around their lair before leaving their home forever.
  16. Day 84 – The Shambler increases to HD 11.
  17. Day 92 – Due to climate instability, many of the various tribes make their way from the caves in search of a new home. Forming a demonic alliance, they begin the long march to Fort Ray.
  18. Day 100 – The roaming warband arrives at Fort Ray. Their forces are composed of an 11 HD shambling mound, a crom sorcerer, 12 tubers, 14 bulbs, 34 taproots, 14 gnolls, and 24 somewhat large crabs with 18 feral bandit pets on leashes.
